By Luis M. Méndes That is a very complicated question. What’s family? Wife, children, parents? What is affair? something we really didn’t ask for but one day just by sheer luck pulled the “right number”. How far can the “obligations” of the family partner become a heavy weight (lead ball used to be tied to slaves), how many times are you going to say “get me this or that”. Something like “get me a glass of water” and when the glass of water arrives you ask for some other item that is located next to the refrigerator? In other words you are a “pain in the rear end patient” that are very lucky your wife, son, mother, father doesn’t just walk away and just plainly refuse to become a SLAVE. So what’s the difference between a slave and the person that because of family ties cares for you? It could be easily answered if we were to use “common sense,” but since “common sense is the least common of all senses” we become a “dictator” without even knowing it! I believe the difference between a “monster-patient” and a “normal patient” is….invert the roles and you will get the right answer! The same way with the paid attendants, hey is an attendant NOT your personal slave. As a patient you have to understand what’s important and not, what’s within the abilities of the attendant (for love or for $), and don’t think because you have MS, or a spinal injury or just a broken leg that will be back to normal in a short time. The rule of thumb we have to follow with persistence is NOT TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF WHOMEVER IS WILLING TO DO THINGS FOR US. The other thing is to ALWAYS say “Thank You!” “Please,” “I don’t need this or that right away,” “Whenever you feel like doing it,” and remember that an envelope with “some monetary reward” always is appreciated. Like everything else, like I said before, is just “a little common sense, the pro…….” Luis M. Méndes “Is MS a family affair?”© April 2007
