Independence Through Technology

by Richard (Beejet) & Elizabeth

With his Permobil C2K power wheelchair Richard can: Elevate and lower his legs, elevate himself eight inches, and recline and tilt back so he is horizontal. He can lean back all the way and push himself up in the chair when he slides down in the seat. He can use the chair at doctors' and dentists' offices and barbershop without having to transfer to another chair.

With his computer he can: Play any game he likes at any time with friends or alone. He can reconcile his bank statement and check up on his investments, do his tax return, chat with friends in the same town or across the globe. He can also look up the latest information on MS, or use speech recognition software when his fingers refuse to type.

With our home's wide doorways, easy to use doorknob handles, and ramps, he can go in and out as he pleases. Special telescoping peepholes installed at wheelchair level make it possible for him to see who is at the door. Sinks were installed that his legs can go underneath when he pulls up to them in his chair. The pipes are covered with vinyl foam covering to protect his knees. A roll in shower was put in. Special plates with raised edges allow him to get the food onto the spoon himself.

In his hospital bed he can sit up, raise his legs, and use a Super Pole to help him turn onto his side. Thanks to remote controls, he can operate TV, VCR, ceiling fan, and satellite dish from his bed. He can turn on the electric blanket if he is cold. He can remove or pull up the blankets and sheets with a reacher.

A transmitter worn around his neck can signal a caregiver within 100 feet at the press of a button. He carries a cell phone in a scooter pack that can be used to call for assistance if needed.

He has a motorized standing frame that he can pull up to in his chair, attach a sling and be pulled to a standing position. The standing frame can then move around while he controls it with a joystick.

There are many things Richard can no longer do independently. But if he had lived years ago, before the technology advanced, there would be a great deal more things he could not do.
