Poem

late fall

By annnieM (Deanna Mattox)

the wind picked up

leaves twirling and dancing across the yard

my scarecrow lay in ruins

her purple dress around her head

straw and corn husks in the dirt

facedown she was

no birds to scare away

from the empty garden anyway

no snow, yet, to blanket her shame

her failure

her utter collapse

the chill deepened

another huge yellow cottonwood leaf

traveled aflutter and lodged by the picnic table

tall wheat bending

to the eminence of winter

only the sky above unscathed

turquoise hung with pearly clouds

the sky saying Summer

idyllic and peaceful

clouds just hanging

no movement

no hurry to be gone

yet the winds will insist
