If I could be a flower...hmmm... how would I decide?

By annnieM (Deanna Mattox)

Well, I wouldn't want to be a flower that would wilt and die quickly.  I wouldn't want to be a flower shop flower... a flower that someone may or may not choose to give to someone else.  I wouldn't want to be a flower that had no certainty about its future.  I would not want to sit in a refrigerated showcase... with the possibility that I would be completely overlooked and not bought, and then thrown into the trash.

I think I would rather be a bedding plant where someone would take me home and plant me and enjoy me for at least the summer.  But what kind?  Pansies are absolutely cheerful and wonderful and gorgeous to look at but... they do not like the summer heat so they don't last very long.  I wouldn't want to be a tulip because I've seen the deer come along and just chomp the flower off.  In fact, out here in the country, the deer will eat just about anything but marigolds.  Maybe I'd like to be a marigold... in someone's flower box or flowerbed.  Marigolds are very hardy flowers... they can take the heat... something that just destroys me right now.  Marigolds are pretty to look at... something I'm not very often anymore.  (If ever I was) And marigolds not only give you nice flowers in your flowerbed... but they give you seeds galore!  If you just let the flower heads dry and then collect them... you have enough seeds for the whole town next year! So that's it... I would be an ordinary boring marigold.  Nothing fancy, just a flower with staying power.
