Mom's Eighty-Fifth

by John Caldwell 04/28/2008

Her grand kids got together and planned her birthday party to beat all birthdays. She has been a big inspiring force in our family all our lives. Being one of the original 250 Mary Kay consultants she was always positive. Drawers were full of motivational tapes and the remains of all the over worked tape players. She always kept stuff for years. Some with me in mind seeing how I started out early taking things apart and eventually putting them back together. Always with a supportive word, that is much of drive in life which she shared with all around her.

Known as “Oui” to her grandkids and “Ouida” to all others, she is always there to listen to their stories and with loving support. Not to mention the stacks of jars of cookies and such on her kitchen counters. Normal routine has been, enter, say hi and hug Oui, then go to the jars.

She also had puzzles and games which were kept in a 500 year old Chinese cabinet along with an Ostrich egg and a wind up grand piano.

Whenever I had an idea like raising mice she would give her ok and also helpful advice and was  always encouraging me to explore all avenues along the way. When weather got cold the mice came inside to my bedroom. The only stipulation was “Don't let them get loose!” So I put a wall (board) up across the doorway to keep any loose mice in the room.

The kids got in touch with many people in Mom's life. Cousins I had not seen for many years. One of my cousins I last saw back in the “60's”. Mom always was one to keep in touch and keep records. There were some of the people she went to elementary school with invited.

One granddaughter had made a history in pictures with musical background that followed the storyline. This creative flare is one of many we credit to Mom.

She is an artist and inventor of projects that were passed down the generations.

Mom/Qui is loved by many whose lives she has touched. Teacher and motivator, she's forever influencing the generations.

It was truly a Birthday of Birthdays, that's for sure. Besides we have proof! Most pictures were electronically produced and saved and passed from E-mail to E-mail. Those that were not able to come started to see the pictures before day's end.

Thank you Mr. Gore! For he invented how to make us smile.

If only in jest over claims ,”He invented the Internet”. See, bet you have a grin. ROFL
