By Lazarus (Howard Hux)
The other day I sat me down to write a verse or two. No great poetic masterpiece that to me could bring acclaim, Nor yet some tender, winsome verse, some pretty maid to woo. Just some simple train of thought my readers’ mind to claim.
“Now, old boy,” I said to me, “what would you like to say?” I thought a bit and tried to think, my mind just squirmed around, The gears they whirred, the smoke was known, my brain would not engage! And then at last, a glimpse of light, my mind no more was bound. “I’ve got it now,” I gleefully thought, my head was just aflame. I’ll dwell upon the ladies fair, no nobler cause is found, For it will soon be Mothers Day and it’s good to grant them fame. So I sat there for a little while just thinking of our Mothers, And soon I came to realize, without them, I’d have no Brothers!
And then from out of nowhere an awful thought arose, A thought so cold and sinister I lost all thoughts of Prose. The thought that chilled me through and through & froze my mind up tight, Suppose that all the Mom’s that were, agreed to go on strike! The pictures that this conjured up within my dumbstruck mind, Were such that it might stop the World and alter all mankind! Why---dirty, hungry children would soon be everywhere, And Dads would dress in wrinkled shirts and grayish underwear! Dust balls the size of puppies would roll around the floor, And if the doorbell chanced to ring, why who would get the door? And taking kids to soccer games is something all mom’s do, The local schools athletic plans would surely be all through. Dishes would be piled high and if they fell they’d break, When all the cans were opened up then who would supper make? With beds unmade and bills unpaid, no groceries showing up, Sure all of us, round all the world would sure be out of luck.
So all you children hear me and think of what I say, You must be sure and praise your Mom for it is Mothers Day. Be sure and say you love her for all the things she is, Here are some hints to help you. Lets have a little quiz. Do not take her for granted, and ignore her loving care, For unless she stays close by us, the world will not be there You often should say “Thank you” and share a little hug, For that will make her happy as a bed bug in a rug. She dos not ask for very much for all the things she does, The finest way to thank her is to fill her time with love. Lazarus, May,2005
