Poem

By Pat Dwyer

LONGING FOR HAPPINESS

Searching to fill a void in my heart

a trying quest for an elixir or ambrosia

a hunt for calmness and contentment

that some refer to as happiness!

So many people seek happiness,

yet know not where exactly to look;

and when not found amid the world

they search in vain inside some wise old book

Worn out by the strain of my life

tired of treading on unsteady path

with a heart-split in two

devoid of joy, spent of serenity.

Sadness strikes the inner tranquility

yearning to unlock a spell of peace,

searching for a location where I can find delight

I pondered all the places, but all in vain

I climbed on the highest peaks

lost in dense woods engulfed by fog

in search of some lucidity in summer haze

finding nothing but distraction.

I searched my sunny youthful days,

where happiness appeared complete,

as I ventured forth to my new brave world

I found a vacant space within.

I didn’t find it in my wealth

that plunges into deepest sorrows

I found it inside and other weirder places

like precious smiles and the innocence of childhood.

Like beauty in the eyes of beholders,

It lies beneath strange emotions,

smirking when nothing goes your way,

deep in that abyss of adversity-the heart!
